Meet Preview: NYRR Millrose Games Trials

By Chris Lotsbom for ArmoryTrack.com

NEW YORK (14-Jan) -- On Wednesday, January 15, the NYRR Millrose Games Trials will be held at the New Balance Track & Field Center at The Armory, serving as a qualifying meet for the prestigious NYRR Millrose Games. The 107th edition of the NYRR Millrose Games is set for the afternoon and evening of Saturday, February 15.

At the NYRR Millrose Games Trials, a number of coveted high school and youth division entries will be up for grabs. Here's a look at some of the most exciting events to watch out for on Wednesday.

- Boys and Girls 55m. Some of the region's fastest athletes will take to the straightaway in hopes of earning an automatic bid. St. Francis's Justin Guerre, winner of the Molloy Stanner Games boys 55m, returns to The Armory. He's ranked in the top 15 nationally after timing 6.46 last weekend. Fastest among girls entrants is Medgar Evers Prep senior Brenessa Thompson.

- CHSAA 4x800m. The 4x800m relay is always a thrill, and teams from the East Coast always seem to be at the forefront of the national lists. Chaminade, currently the top boys team in the nation, is entered with a time of 8:00.80, though will face tough competition from Saint Anthony's and Fordham Prep.

- The Girls 4x400m may be the deepest event, with elite teams spread out over a number of sections. Columbia High School, led by Stanford-bound senior Olivia Baker, is in the Suburban NJ Girls 4x400, while New Rochelle, the nation's leading 4x200m team, is in the Suburban W/P/D Girls 4x400m.

- The Youth races at the NYRR Millrose Games Trials will showcase the area's fastest children in three events. The 55m dash is for those 8-years-old and under, while the Youth 4x200m Relay and the NYRR Youth 800m is for competitors 12-years-old and under. Podium finishers will all advance on to the NYRR Millrose Games.

- And of course, the New Balance High School Miles. The quintessential Millrose Games event is the mile, which has been a tradition year after year. Both the Boys and Girls winner at the NYRR Millrose Games Trials will automatically qualify for the NYRR Millrose Games on February 15.

Germantown Academy's Sam Ritz, Christian Brothers Academy's Mike McClemens, and Eastport-South Manor's Tom Meehan are the leading boys entrants, while Abington Heights's Tessa Barrett and Classical's Maddy Berkson lead the girls field. Barrett won the Foot Locker Cross Country National Championship this fall.
